The father of psychoanalysis was interested in looking at the origins of human behavior through the prism of sexual drives. His process of using what he called ‘the talking cure’ helped people to admit the truth about themselves and heal psychological wounds. This type of introspective analysis became a preoccupation of people in the 20th Century and in and of itself is one of Freud’s most influential contributions. And though sex was a central feature of many of his theories, when it came to his own sexuality, Freud felt he was exempt from the drives that ruled the lives of ordinary people.

His body of work remains both influential and controversial a century later, which is great testimony to his perceptiveness and conclusions regarding the nature of human behavior.
